Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan tentang dinamika Muhammadiyah dalam mencari solusi kelangkaan ulama. Penelitian berbentuk  kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Penggalian data dilakukan dengan teknik observasi, dokumentasi dan wawancara mendalam (in depth interview) dengan para informan yang ditentukan dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis interaktif Miles dan Huberman. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: [1]. Muhammadiyah belum merumuskan tentang konsep ulama secara detail. Namun demikian, terdapat minimal 2 karakteristik ulama yang menjadi idealisme para tokoh Muhammadiyah, yaitu [a]. Menguasai al-‘ulum al-shari’yyah (ilmu-ilmu keagamaan); [b]. Terlibat dan berbaur dalam kegiatan masyarakat (al-ihtimam bi umur al-ummah); [2]. Terdapat 3 upaya Muhammadiyah dalam mengatasi defisit ulama, yaitu: mendirikan Pendidikan Ulama Tarjih Muhammadiyah (PUTM), revitalisasi peran pesantren, dan membangun kerjasama dengan Asia Muslim Charity Foundation (AMCF). Implikasi teoritis penelitian ini adalah adanya model baru kaderisasi ulama dengan membangun jaringan kerjasama institusional antara Muhammadiyah dengan AMCF. Sedangkan implikasi praktis dari penelitian ini adalah perlunya kajian mendalam tentang efektivitas pendidikan ma’had sebagai media kaderisasi ulama Muhammadiyah.
